The Abbey Mural Prize was created in 1932 in honor of muralist Edwin Austin Abbey NA to support the creation and restoration of public murals in the United States. Each year, the National Academy of Design awards grants to create or restore public murals – especially those that promote accessibility, serve local audiences, and inspire community dialogue.
Applications for the 2023 Abbey Mural Prize will be open from Monday, February 13, 2023, until Sunday, April 23, 2023.
Grants
Grants typically range from $10,000 to $40,000 USD in minimally restricted support for the production and installation of mural(s) on and within public buildings and on buildings owned by charitable institutions.
Up to $125K total awarded annually.
The jury reserves the right to award grantees full or partial funding.
Eligibility Requirements
Applications are open to all artists, architects, designers, as well as arts and community-based organizations and other nonprofits, with project leads eighteen years of age or older.
Project proposals must be for sites located within the United States, Tribal Nations, and U.S. territories including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Projects must be for public buildings or buildings owned by a charitable institution; otherwise, there are no restrictions.
